Efficiency Improvement through Modernized Intralogistics - A New Packaging System for Hausbrot.at

SUCCESS STORY

HAUSBROT.at
INCREASED EFFICIENCY DUE TO UPDATED INTRALOGISTICS.

Nowadays, as the demand for fresh food delivered straight to someone’s door is continuously increasing, companies must come up with innovative and efficient ways of remaining competitive in today’s marketplace. Hausbrot.at, a food delivery pioneer in Vienna, has been supplying customers with fresh breakfast items every day since 2011. The company faces the challenge of optimising their storage and delivery processes in the light of increasing order volumes and high customer expectations. Fb Industry Automation GmbH supports Hausbrot.at in their objective to maximise efficiency.

INITIAL SITUATION.

Hausbrot.at delivers bread, baked goods as well as chilled and warehouse goods to nurseries, companies and individual customers. With around 1,000 orders per day, manual order handling was inefficient whilst also being prone to errors. Storage processes required restructuring due to high order volumes in order to avoid bottlenecks and delays. Hausbrot.at recognised the need to implement a modern, highly automated storage system to handle the increase in demand.

THE CUSTOMER’S OBJECTIVE FOR Fb INDUSTRY AUTOMATION.

  • Hausbrot.at set the following objectives to handle ever-increasing customer demands:

    • Space optimisation: Effective use of the existing storage space to increase the capacity.
    • Improving picking and packing processes: Faster, more accurate and error-free order handling.
    • Seamless IT integration: Ensures efficient communications and data processing between the current and new systems.
    • Reducing errors: Minimising human errors through automation and the use of advanced technology.
    • Improving working conditions: Reduces the physical strain whilst improving efficiency amongst staff.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS & CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS.

The following specific requirements and expectations of the new storage system were made based on the objectives that were defined:

  1. Maximisation of room space: Effective use of available space in the current warehouse for storing and managing stock.
  2. Avoiding sources of errors: Reducing errors through automation and accurate, guided picking processes.
  3. Increasing picking efficiency: Implementing a system that enables simultaneous processing of several orders at once whilst reducing the walking done by staff.
  4. Separating picking and packing areas: Clear structuring of work processes to avoid bottlenecks.
  5. Integration of state-of-the-art technologies: Use of advanced technologies such as pick-to-light systems, intralogistics software and state-of-the-art conveyor technology.
  6. Sustainability: Optimising processes to reduce energy consumption and supporting the environmental aims of Hausbrot.at.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION.

Implementation of the project took place with close collaboration between Hausbrot.at and Fb Industry Automation. The project was divided into various phases to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption to Hausbrot’s ongoing operations.

March/April 2021
PLANNING- & DESIGN PHASE.

Specific requirements and challenges for Hausbrot.at are analysed in detail during the initial phase. Planning and design of the new storage system take place on this basis. The aim of this phase was to develop a customised solution that covers the needs of the company whilst satisfying all the objectives that were defined.

July 2021
INSTALLATION PHASE.

Installation of the new storage systems started in July 2021. These included the racks, the pick-to-light technology and the conveyor systems. Installation was quick and efficient to ensure that disruptions to operations at Hausbrot.at were kept to a minimum.

July 2021
INTEGRATIONS- & TEST PHASE.

The integration and test phase took place after installation. The Fb Stash intralogistics software was integrated into existing IT infrastructure at Hausbrot.at. Comprehensive testing was performed on all components to ensure that the system works flawlessly and also provides the desired results.

August 2021
COMMISSIONING.

The new system was commissioned in August 2021. Staff at Hausbrot.at were trained in how to handle the new technology to ensure a smooth transition and also to make sure that they could run the new processes efficiently.

CUSTOMER BENEFITS.

Implementation of the new intralogistics solution brought significant advantages for Hausbrot.at. Extensive modernisation meant that the company had considerably improved its efficiency whilst minimising the number of errors.

Increased order capacity

Thanks to these new systems, processing capacity was doubled from 500 to 1,000 orders per day. This increase in capacity meant Hausbrot.at could efficiently respond to increased order volumes and improve customer satisfaction.

Increased efficiency and accuracy

Use of pick-to-light technology and optimised warehouse organisation means search times were minimised and the number of errors was reduced. The light signals guide staff accurately to the correct storage locations and show the exact quantity to be picked, improving the accuracy and speed of order processing.

Optimised use of space

The strategic arrangement of the storage areas and installation of cleverly designed shelving systems mean optimal use of the available space. This leads to increased storage capacity without needing extra space and improved storage.

More efficient packaging processes

Clear separation of picking and packing areas greatly improves the efficiency of packing processes. Handling the processes in parallel means the lead time for orders is shortened, reducing bottlenecks and also increasing productivity.

Improved working conditions

Modern technologies reduce the physical strain on staff. The pick-to-light technology and conveyor systems minimise the need for manual intervention, leading to greater staff satisfaction and fewer errors.

Increased customer satisfaction

Hausbrot.at was able to speed up delivery times and improve the reliability of orders thanks to the system’s greater efficiency and accuracy. This led to increased customer satisfaction as orders could be delivered more quickly and without errors.

Sustainability

Optimised use of space and more efficient processes also play a part in enduring sustainability. The reduction of transport routes within the warehouse and improved storage means lower energy consumption. This supports the environmental objectives at Hausbrot.at and makes operations greener.

THOMAS SIMON

Managing Director and authorised signatory

“Fb Industry Automation’s biggest strength are their staff. Customer-focused, solution-oriented and competent. This meant that not just were the project targets reached, but together with the Fb Industry Automation team, it was possible to come up with solutions that no-one would ever have thought about when starting the project.”

ANDREAS AUER

Project Manager at Fb Industry Automation

“Automation means that whilst we offer a wider range of items, the necessary storage space has been kept to a minimum and is easier to manage. Usage of pick-to-light technology means the reading and interpreting of items on the delivery note, as well as searching for them, no longer apply and it also practically eliminates mistakes when picking similar items.”
